Frequently Asked Questions

What is cognitive behavioral therapy like? It is very interactive. Dr. Vermilyea and you will engage in discussions about the way you think about particular things and come up with alternatives. You may discuss behaviors that are a problem for you and work to change those. There is almost always reading and often weekly “experiments” in doing things differently. These assignments are helpful and relevant real world experience as you make changes in your life.

Why is there homework? Homework, experiments, reading are all part of this type of therapy.

Will I be asked to change things I don’t want to change? All therapeutic goals are set in collaboration.

What is ERP or exposure and response prevention? Exposure and response prevention is a technique used in treating many different types of anxiety. Simply put, in order to be taught how to cope with anxiety, you have to experience it. You will face anxiety in a specially planned manner that is never overwhelming in order to know you are back in control of it and not controlled by the anxiety.

Can I discuss my therapy with others? You may speak to anyone about your treatment. Dr. Vermilyea, however, holds all your conversations and treatments in complete confidence.

Who can help me with my billing questions or scheduling an appointment? Tracy vanderMerwe (van-da-meer) is the office manager responsible for all patient accounts and scheduling. Ms. vanderMerwe can be contacted at tracyvdm@comcast.net or (603) 580-2337.

What if I have to cancel an appointment? Once you agree to an appointment, you can cancel it with 24 hours notice without incurring late cancellation charges.

Is there Parking at the Office? 
Parking is free and is located conveniently all around the building. Parking is limited to two hours to ensure availability. For your convenience, there is also free parking in the garage attached to the building.

How about Public Transit?
The office may be reached by public transit using bus route 134 which provides regular scheduled service to TradeCenter 128 from the Wellington Station (Orange line) and from the Winchester Center Station (via Lowell Commuter Rail). The MBTA information line is helpful: 1-800-392-6100.

Is the office accessible for the physically handicapped?
The office is completely accessible to persons with physical handicaps. Designated parking is available outside the door to 400 TradeCenter and in the parking garage as well. There are elevators to the fifth floor, and all facilities are handicap accessible as well.
